The Very Official Player Cards
Custom footy-card style designs created for junior players who were absolutely ready to see themselves on something collectable.
The Story
This project started as a fun surprise for my son’s football team.
The kids were already obsessed with footy cards. They knew the players, the poses, the stats, the shiny versions, the serious expressions and the very important business of trading one card for three others in a deal that made absolutely no sense to adults.
My house was already losing the battle against tiny pieces of cardboard, so naturally the next logical step was to make custom ones.
The Design Approach
I wanted the cards to feel inspired by the collector cards the kids already loved, without directly copying them.
The design needed to feel bold, fun and player-focused. Each card had to feel like a proper little moment for that player, while still sitting together as part of a full team set.
The caricature-style player images helped turn the photos into something more graphic and playful. Enough likeness to feel personal. Enough exaggeration to feel fun. Enough polish that the kids could immediately start acting famous about it.
The Finished Thing
The finished cards became one of the first Sideline Studios ideas that properly took shape.
What started as a small team surprise turned into something bigger — a product, a gift idea and a way to celebrate junior players in a format they already understood and loved.
Each player got their own little official moment. Which is adorable, right up until they start asking about limited editions.
Good For
This kind of project works well when a player, team or season deserves something more collectable than another photo in the group chat.
